Dear Quilting Friends,
Ah fall! After a very hot summer the thought of autumn brings to mind leaves falling from trees, pumpkin patches and cool breezes. It also has me thinking of the fantastic colors of autumn and all the fabric in those colors! All this leads to our next Kansas Quilters Organization meeting taking place at Cross Wind Conference Center near Hesston October 17 -19, 2008.
The KQO board members have been making plans for our return visit to Cross Wind Conference Center. It is a lovely facility in a country setting. Most of the sleeping quarters are in the Conference Center, as well as several of the classrooms and the dining room. Mabee Center has a large meeting room and smaller classroom.
One of the best things about our upcoming meeting is our teacher line up. We are fortunate to have Kim Diehl of Idaho as our national teacher. She is a self-taught quilter, designer, author and teacher who uses simple patchwork and machine appliqué to make her cozy, scrappy style quilts. Kim will be teaching a Fellowship class on Sunday. If you have not taken a Fellowship class, be sure to check it out. Read all about how to apply for this opportunity inside this issue.
You have requested through the surveys that you wanted variety, and our regional teachers will deliver just that. Junelle Hills of Colby will be teaching a class on border-fabric quilts. Cricket Turley of Dodge City is teaching Star Quilts. For those of you that have wanted something wearable, Sharon Winklepleck from Cullison is offering a jacket class. Kim Diehl is offering a class on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, and Junelle Hills will be teaching a rug class at that time as well.
The KQO general meeting is on Saturday and we will be electing some new board members. We will also have our block drawings, door prizes and the popular “show and tell.” It gives everyone a chance to show their latest achievement in quilting, whether it be a potholder or a king-size quilt.
There is a saying “Time flies when you’re having fun.” This applies to me as my second year as KQO President is drawing to a close. It has been such a learning experience. Yes, there were missed deadlines and times when things didn’t go as planned, but overall it’s been a fantastic two years. That is the wonderful thing about KQO -- you get to meet people from all over the state and beyond, who have an interest in quilting just like you. Being on the KQO Board has given me an opportunity to really get to know the other twenty people serving as board members. They were just other quilters when I started, and have become quilting friends. I want to encourage you all to volunteer to serve on the board at some point -- the experience is worth it. I also want to take this time to thank everyone who has helped me along this journey, especially the board members. Whether it was in thought, word or deed, I want you to know it was appreciated. It’s off to the sewing room!
